snarky

Do you like to watch the TV station about buying and decorating homes? Since this post is slightly snarky, I’m not going to mention any names, because I love the station and shows. It’s the people ON the shows, who are buying a new house that poke my Snarky muscle. .

I love to look at houses.

  • Open House on my street? I’m going!
  • House for sale? Well, it’s kind of hard to look at those anymore unless you’re already pre-approved. Besides, I don’t want to take up my realtor’s time with my nosy butt.
  • House Plans? I love those! But now, because of the miracle of television {smile} you can look at up to several houses a day, all from the comfort of your own couch!

This is what gets me: first time homebuyers with a small budget. They still want all the bells and whistles. Or should I say stainless steel and granite?

It just gets me to see a 25 yr old woman {who has never owned a home before, and in some cases, has not even lived outside of Mom & Dad’s house} go through a perfectly good kitchen, outdated though it may be, with her nose in the air declaring, “It would need a complete gut. I can’t live with this.”

What? No Granite?

Okay, yes, it has Formica countertops and white appliances, or maybe black, and a stainless steel sink with an older faucet – but come on! Can you cook in there? Is it at all possible to cook meals in there for a year or two while you save money to update it? In many cases, apparently not.

Then there is the Master Suite. It must have two large walk-in closets, a large bathroom with shower and tub and two sinks, as well as the largest bedroom area in the house. I’ve seen people {both men and women} look at a large, walk-in closet and walk right back out saying, “Oh that’s not big enough for all my clothes, or shoes, or suits or belts or hats {you pick}.” Really? Maybe they should sell some clothes to afford a bigger house.

After many episodes of, “But it doesn’t have granite countertops.” the one that really got me was this one – “But I don’t like this color granite.”

Let’s Play House!

Remember when houses were put up for sale without being staged? Potential buyers used their imaginations to envision how it might look with their own furniture and belongings in them. Now, houses need to be staged, because so many people have lost their imaginations. They have no idea how to manage that empty house.

I’ve heard many homebuyers ask the realtor, “What is this space for?” Really? Let’s see, it’s right next to the kitchen, maybe it’s a dining room! Or, it’s off the hallway – could it be a small bedroom or office?

The Cart Before the Horse

Amd then there are those who do things a little backwards. They’ve graduated college and are still living with Mom & Dad to save money for a house. Okay, nothing wrong wtih that. But then you learn more – “We are high school sweethearts, we’ve never gone out with anyone else. So, I expect we’ll learn  a lot about each other when we move in together. Hopefully, we’ll get engaged and then married!” So, they were willing to commit to a $340,000 house, but not to each other?

Well, I’m glad I got that off my chest. Do you ever have snarky thoughts about your favorite shows? Please tell me I’m not the only one! Please share with your friends!
