Joy is everywhere, if we can open our eyes and hearts to see it. Joy is even available to us in the difficult times. For joy is completely different than happiness.
Happiness depends on our circumstances. Joy is in spite of our circumstances. Joy is a gift from God and if we choose Joy – happiness is the result.
“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thess. 5:18 (NKJV)
I have a little chalkboard with a pretty frame; my sister made it. I hang it up near the front door and many times I write this verse on it. To be a reminder.
It took me a long time to understand this verse. ‘In everything give thanks … ‘ How is that possible? How can I give thanks for not having any money to buy food, or to pay the electric bill? How can I give thanks for my child’s illness or losing a dear one to cancer? Those are not good things. What kind of hypocrite would I be to say, Thank you Lord for the cancer that took my child.’
It’s not the cancer we are thanking Him for, it’s the fact that we are smack dab in the middle of God’s will. And there is no better place to be, even when difficult things are going on.
We never see the big picture; we simply aren’t capable. But God see’s the big picture. He see’s the front and the back and the sides, and inside the picture. He see’s every brush stroke, every stitch, and every single color change. He knows that picture intimately, while we are barely aware that there is a picture!
How does this relate to DIY? 🙂 I don’t know that it does, but as I was driving to church yesterday, I was reminded of that verse. And I thought I’d like to share it with you.
Look for joy today – it’s there.
